Chapter Four - Telnet Access
 

Software: SecureCRT 3.0 Van Dyke Technologies

Instructions:

  1. Log into your account control panel and select the SSH Icon. If you recieve a prompt that your account is not SSH enabled, please follow the instructions for having OnTimeHost Support set that up for you.
  2. Once SSH has been enabled, the SSH manager will be displayed. Keep this screen open for later user.
  3. Download SecureCRT from Van Dyke Technologies and follow installation instructions.
  4. Launch the SecureCRT application. 
  5. Create a new connection profile: 
    • Protocol = SSH1 (Do not select SSH2)
    • Hostname = yourdomain.com (.net, .org)
    • Port = 22
    • Username = Your Account User Name
    • Cipher = 3DES
    • Authentification = You can select password or RSA. If you select password go to step 10, for RSA go to step 6
  6. RSA Authentification: When you select the option to use the RSA Authentification you will be prompted to run the RSA Key Generation wizard to create an identity file. Select Yes.
  7. Select the option to "Use Global" and then click on the "Create Identity File" button.

  9. Follow the instructions for the RSA Key Generation Wizard. When prompted you can enter a passphrase and comment that will be displayed each time you log in. Use RSA key length of 1024 bits. 
  10. In your SSH Manager in your account control panel input your RSA key you just generated in the specified text box. This should be in a file called something like identity.pub in the same directory as you installed SecureCRT. Open this file in a text editor and copy and paste the contents into your control panel. Be sure not to change anything when you copy the key, if anything is changed, your key will not work. Proceed to step 11.
  11. Password Authentification: Select the option to use Password as the authentification type. In your SSH Manager in your account control panel you can leave the text area on the SSH manager where you are prompted for the RSA key blank. Proceed to step 11.
  12. Click on "Submit" in your SSH Manager.
  13. On the following screen in your SSH Manager, input your access addresses. These will be the domain(s) of your ISP, i.e. *.earthlink.net, *.mindspring.com or your static IP address (DSL). Submit these changes.

  14. Wait about 10 minutes for the changes to take affect and then you may log in using the profile you created in SecureCRT above to your account. If you chose to use RSA Authentification you will prompted to enter the passphrase you selected during the RSA key generation process. If you chose to use Password Authentification, you will be prompted for your Account Password.
